What types of airbag defects caused the Recall?
The Toyota recall includes several different vehicles for many different types of airbag defects. In January of 2013, the Toyota Motor Corporation recalled 1.1 million vehicles due to airbags having a short circuit problem which can cause an airbag to deploy without warning. Then in October of 2013, 800,000 vehicles were recalled because the airbags deployed without warning. This problem was linked to webs from yellow sac spiders which clogged the fuel tank vent line and could cause the deployment of the airbags.
In April of 2014, Toyota recalled 1.3 million vehicles because it was suspected that they there may be a defect in the spiral cable of the steering column that can cause airbags to become deactivated. The following June of 2014, Toyota added 766,000 more vehicles to the airbag recall because they had Takata airbags, which could deploy with too much force and leave passengers with injuries caused by shrapnel. Toyota had already recalled 2.14 million vehicles in April of 2013 for this problem however, Takata failed to provide an accurate list of all the vehicles with this problem. Finally, in October of 2014, the Toyota Motor Corporation included 20,000 more vehicles to the defective Takata airbags and sent additional notices to 247,000 owners of vehicles that were included in the recall strongly advising that they bring their vehicles in for repairs as soon as possible.
