What is Talcum Powder?
Talcum powder comes from talc which is a hydrated magnesium silicate. It can be used for several purposes and is more commonly known as baby powder. It can be used to in the treatment and presentation of rashes, for personal hygiene, and can be used in cosmetics by many women. Talc which is in many of these products is usually thought to be safe but it can cause dangerous and life-threatening health problems when used as a feminine hygiene product.
How is Talcum Powder Alleged to be Associated with Ovarian Cancer?
Health concerns related to the use of talcum powder have been around for years. However, producers sold the product and marketed it as safe while failing to give consumers safety information. In 1971, researchers discovered that talc became embedded in seventy-five percent of all ovarian cancer tumors that were studied. Many other studies confirmed that when talc is used in a woman’s genital area, it may travel to the vagina, go into the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. In June of 2013, a study that was found in the Cancer Prevention Research medical journal discovered that women that used talcum powder for feminine hygiene may have a twenty to thirty percent higher risk of ovarian cancer than those who did not use it.
Johnson and Johnson and several other producers of talcum powder failed to properly warn women about the risks of ovarian cancer linked to their product. According to some lawsuits, an expert stated that approximately ten thousand cases of ovarian cancer may be linked to talcum powder per year. Talcum powder may also be similar to asbestos and may cause mesothelioma.
