Elizabeth Miller is an associate attorney with the nursing home and medical malpractice division at the firm. Elizabeth attended Furman University on music and academic scholarships, earning a B.A. in music and philosophy in 2002. After graduation, Elizabeth enrolled in Wake Forest University’s divinity school while concurrently applying for law school. Wake Forest University was a terrific fit, and Elizabeth stayed for law school, attending on a full scholarship and earning her J.D. in 2006. Wake Forest University excels in its clinical program offerings, including the longstanding Elder Law Clinic, which introduces students to the basics of estate planning and to consumer issues unique to the elderly population. This lit the spark for what later became an interest in nursing home neglect cases at The Higgins Firm. Elizabeth also participated in an internship with a federal magistrate judge in Nashville prior to graduation from law school. This was another enriching experience for her legal career, but it also introduced her to Nashville. Now, she cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Elizabeth’s legal experience prior to joining the firm in 2016 included civil litigation and corporate discovery. You can see this experience woven into her approach to guiding clients through the process of pre-litigation and early phases of litigation. By starting her legal career at a regional insurance defense firm, Elizabeth developed a knowledge base in personal injury and premises liability. Elizabeth credits this insurance defense training as a crucial piece of her career through which she was exposed to all aspects of personal injury litigation. Ultimately, she realized that she would rather be behind the scenes, providing support to litigation teams. After several years in corporate discovery and a three-year break to focus on her young family, Elizabeth reentered law firm life in 2016. She joined the The Higgins Firm as a part-time attorney.

At The Higgins Firm, Elizabeth provides litigation support for the nursing home neglect and medical malpractice team, particularly in the pre-litigation and early litigation phases of a lawsuit. She finds meaning and purpose in helping to give a voice to clients, particularly those whose elderly family members suffered due to nursing home neglect.

“When I speak with a client for the first time, I always take a moment before the call. I make sure to remind myself that I am speaking with someone who has suffered a loss, either due to their own injuries, or due to injuries or death of a beloved person in their life. Personhood is the centerpiece. I want to dignify this in my work and interactions with clients. I also remind myself that this might be the client’s first and only exposure to the legal system. On top of suffering a loss, most of our clients are learning about the legal process, too. A big part of my job is to help clients navigate the early part of this process. In addition to serving clients in this way, we have a great team of paralegals and attorneys at the firm. I truly enjoy supporting the work they do for families in need.”

When Elizabeth is not working at the firm, she is keeping up with her husband and little boy, dabbling in music projects or helping with a local nonprofit. She loves living in Nashville due to amazing music scene, the good schools and neighborhoods, as well as the chance to get outside for adventures nearly all year long.
