What is Volkswagen Emissions Fraud?
According to findings from the Environmental Protection Agency in September of 2015, millions of Volkswagen and Audi “Clean Diesel” vehicles had a device on them that allowed the vehicles to give false emissions results or to cheat the test. The device was created to sense when the automobile was undergoing a test and to lower its emissions. However, when the car was actually on the road, it would emit up to forty times the acceptable level of nitrogen oxide.
These automobiles were marketed to the public as being clean and environmentally- friendly as opposed to cars with gasoline engines. The “Clean Diesel” models had better fuel economy and less carbon emissions, however, they had more emissions of nitrogen oxide which is a toxic gas that can lead to breathing problems.
The problem with fixing this device is that updating the software could effect the vehicles’ performance. If Volkswagen decides to retrofit the engines that would cost thousands of dollars for each vehicle. Both of these solutions would harm the resale value of the vehicles.
