The Chrysler Jeep Liberty is under investigation because of the risk of rear impact tank explosions. What Jeep Liberty vehicles are at risk for this hazard?
The Jeep Liberty is a sport-utility vehicle or SUV produced by Chrysler. The models of this vehicle that are risk for this fire safety hazard are:
- The Jeep Liberty models 2002 to 2007. This is estimated to be 975,000 Jeep Liberty vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the Jeep Liberty for this fire safety hazard. The concerns about the Jeep Liberty began after the Jeep Grand Cherokee was inspected in 2010 for possible safety hazards. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been linked to fifteen deaths and forty-five injuries because of rear-impact fires. This inspection prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to also look into this safety hazard for the Jeep Liberty.
These types of rear-impact fuel accidents can be very hazardous that happen when the gas tank is busted in a rear end accident. The fire is caused by an electrical spark in any vehicle involved in the accident. It only takes one spark to create a huge explosion which can cause injuries or death to patients because they may get trapped inside the vehicle.
When was the Jeep Liberty recalled?
Beginning on June 12th of 2013, after being encouraged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall all 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty vehicles, Chrysler stated that they would not comply with the order. Then, on June 18th of 2013, they agreed to recall Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty vehicles but the recall would only be for 1.56 million vehicles and would not include those vehicles from 1999 to 2004.
After issuing the recall, Chrysler still not provide a replacement part for these vehicles and accidents continued to happen as of March 13th of 2014. On July 3rd of 2014, a letter was issued to Chrysler by federal employees asking why it has taken more than a year to begin repairing 1.56 million Jeep vehicles that were recalled the previous year. Chrysler is responding to these recalls slowly and it could take up to five years for people with these vehicles to receive a replacement part or for their vehicle to be repaired.
